Future Proof

“…You have set the limits for us and nothing can change them.” – Job 14:5 (ERV)

God has made us with eternity in mind (1 John 2:25), yet everyday decisions are made harder because we are uncertain how they will impact our future. Whether we decide on health treatment, academic options, employment options, or financial investments, we tend to consider the short-term versus long-term benefits. Time and opportunity, however, are the two variables that God provides.

One may ask: Are we future-proof? How do we guarantee a good outcome to make it to eternity? Here is the Word of God in Job 14:5 (ERV): “The length of our life has been decided. You alone know how long that is. You have set the limits for us and nothing can change them.”

God has set our limits or boundaries concerning events like childbirth, marriage, graduation, retirement, promotions, business ownership, seasons of plenty, and famine. We see God predicting the enslavement of Abrams’s descendants for four hundred years while assuring him of being buried in peace at a good old age (Genesis 15:12-16). There was also the prediction of the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14), which would have made headlines today.

So, what does this mean for us as we contemplate the future? Turn uncertainty into uncommon faith in our God, Who parts the seas and sends manna in the right portions. My career and life are evidence of God connecting the dots. As one company closed, another offered to buy it with me as the single staff retained. A particular expertise then became the single reason I was selected for my next role. And when I needed a reference for my current role, God had already positioned someone who had lectured me fifteen years prior. Even more miraculous, God sent a Guyanese couple twenty years ahead of me to host me when I arrived in that foreign land for the job posting.

God has, indeed, future-proofed us until eternity!

So, I encourage you to pray today, calling with confidence upon our Alpha and Omega (Revelation 21:6-7, Isaiah 44:6). Rest assured that He has set the limits for us, and nothing can change them. His plans are always sure; they’re future-proofed.
